MASHENE Music, Las Vegas Update:
aespa has made a timely shift by abandoning their pursuit of intensely conceptual tracks and opting for more easily relatable music that revolves around the lives of ordinary teenagers. The first track of aespa’s third mini album, titled “Welcome to MY World,” serves as an introduction to their new narrative, which they are now unveiling in the real world. Infused with ethereal falsettos, the song creates a mystical sensation that resonates in one’s mind like whispered echoes.
Contrary to any notions of toning down, aespa’s latest album is anything but, as evidenced by its title track, “Spicy.” This upbeat anthem, reminiscent of a cheerleading chant, perfectly complements the group’s high school cheerleader style.
The producers have ingeniously infused the track with a twist by adding a variation in the arrangement for the hook. With confident and cool lyrics like “Tell me what you see when you look at me ‘Cause I am a 10 out of 10, honestly,” “Spicy” portrays the image of a popular teenage girl.
Taking the spotlight next is the third track, “Salty & Sweet,” which showcases the rap skills of Karina and Giselle. The song’s provocative and mischievous lyrics, such as “You can’t refuse a new treat, shining bright trick,” add a playful element to the rap sections. Shifting gears, “Thirsty” explores the experience of having a crush through its R&B genre and enchanting synth loops that highlight the quartet’s vocal prowess.
While the album isn’t entirely characterized as “cheeky,” tracks like “I’m Unhappy” bring a touch of melancholy. This song offers a critique of how social media often presents a starkly different reality, leading to feelings of disconnection. Lyrics like “Everyone looks perfect every day, as if I’m the only one logged out, the distance between the world and my heart is so far” make it relatable to many individuals living in contemporary society.
Closing the album is the poignant ballad, “‘Til We Meet Again,” a fitting finale for a concert. This fan song, composed with warm acoustic guitar sounds, conveys aespa’s message of everlasting unity with their fans through music, despite physical distances.
The album “My World” also carries the distinct musical touch of SM Entertainment, with some tracks reminiscent of the agency’s other popular K-pop girl group, Red Velvet, or the talented singer Taeyeon. Notably, this is aespa’s first album collaborating with renowned producers such as Geek Boy Al Swettenham and Ludvig Evers.
