MASHENE Music, Las Vegas Outrageous Update May 24, 2023
Batten down the hatches, BLINKs! BLACKPINK’s Born Pink world tour is sparking outrage, and not for the reasons you’d expect. It’s not the pyrotechnics or the phenomenal stage setup that’s raising eyebrows but a full-blown celebrity scandal that’s set the internet ablaze.
The all-girl Korean pop group’s tour has become an unexpected graveyard for celeb reputations, especially among our friends in the East. The high-profile concert series, which recently played for two fiery nights in Macau, has seen a number of Chinese celebrities getting downright vilified just for showing up and shaking it to “How You Like That.”
Angelababy, AKA Angela Yeung Wing, China’s darling actress, is feeling the heat. Despite her well-documented adoration of BLACKPINK, her attendance at the group’s Hong Kong and Macau shows has turned into a PR nightmare. Netizens have effectively branded her a “traitor,” asking, “How can a Chinese actress go to a Korean girl group concert?” For a star of her magnitude, this isn’t just a storm in a teacup—it’s a hurricane in a hot tub.
But she’s not the only one caught in this whirlwind. Cheng Xiao, ex-member of Cosmic Girls/WJSN, is also facing a significant backlash. Even though she attended the BLACKPINK concert in a wheelchair, the sympathy card wasn’t enough to shield her from the criticism. Her outing sparked a trending topic on Weibo, with many expressing distaste at her decision to support the Korean group despite her physical discomfort. Talk about adding insult to injury!
The list of “traitors” keeps growing, with Taiwanese TV host, actress, and singer Dee Hsu (known as Xiǎo S) also being blacklisted for swaying to BLACKPINK’s beat. The plot thickens as her sister, Barbie Hsu, is married to Korean singer DJ Koo, throwing another complex layer to the heated debate.
So what’s this all about? Are we missing something? It all circles back to the bitter political situation brewing between China and Korea. Since Seoul’s 2016 decision to establish the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile shield system, Korean artists have been banned from performing in China. But clearly, BLACKPINK’s infectious beats are too hard to resist, and these celebrities are ready to risk their reputations just to be a part of the K-pop revolution.
At MASHENE Music, Las Vegas, we’ve seen all sorts of scandals, but this takes the cake. Celebrities finding their careers in jeopardy just for attending a concert? It’s a brave new world out there, folks. Stay tuned, because this story is far from over. As BLACKPINK would say: Let’s kill this love (for the scandal, at least).
