Breaking News: ChatGPT AI Turns into Real-Life Avatar for Video Calls, But Is It Too Much?
If you thought Memojis during FaceTime were cool, wait until you hear about Call Annie, an app that turns ChatGPT into Annie, a female avatar that you can video chat with in real-time. But is this really something we should be enjoying or is it just cringe-worthy? Developed by Animato.Ai, the app is exclusive to iOS 16, and requires at least an iPhone 12 or later model to start a video call with Annie because the real-time conversion of linguistic prompts into visual cues draws power from Apple’s Neural Engine.
Some users have found the experience to be “scary stuff” due to occasional flubs in the pronunciation of words, but the developers say that Annie can help with everything from learning and web searches to serving as a tour guide or even a virtual companion. One user on Reddit even asked if Annie could have a “memory” system that will turn it into a smarter “friend,” to which the app developers replied with “soon.”
While the AI conversation seems convincing, the voice still sounds robotic, and there are some issues with the phrase pausing. However, given enough time and improved voice training, Call Annie interactions can become a lot more natural-sounding. But what about security measures? Animato’s App Store description notes that the AI keeps all conversations “confidential,” but it hasn’t specified what kind of security measures have been put in place and whether it uses the user conversations for training and refining Annie’s systems.
It’s reminiscent of the movie “Her,” in which the main character falls in love with an AI, and users are left wondering if this is the future we want. The developers argue that a web browser can’t efficiently leverage the power of a dedicated on-device neural engine the way an installed app can, but is this really enough justification for the potential privacy concerns? As always, only time will tell.
